Labelling machines

Filmatic Packaging Systems offers professional engineering services with regard to turnkey liquid packaging systems.

Inline self-adhesive labelling machine

(See Machine in Action)

For our inline labeller range, we cater for application of the following types of labelling methods:

  • One sided labelling (label applied on one side of container only)
  • Front and back labelling (two labels applied 180˚ opposite one another on the same container using two separate labellers positioned inline)
  • Partial wrap-around labelling (covering more than half the size of the container surface)
  • Full wrap-around labelling (two ends of label overlap on container)

Self-adhesive labelling can encompass various types of labels to be used on low speed to high speed fully automated packaging lines. The label itself can be of any shape or size, based on your own unique branding or product name to blank labels.

All of the above and combinations can be achieved on our inline labeller equipment. The selection of an inline labeller versus a rotary labeller will largely depend on the speed of the production line. For the inline labeller range, there is a limitation on the label height that can be accommodated on the machine.

Rotary self-adhesive labelling machine

For our rotary labeller range, we cater for application of the following types of labelling methods:

  • One sided labelling (label applied on one side of container only)
  • Front and back labelling (two labels applied 180˚ opposite one another on the same container)
  • Partial wrap-around labelling (covering more than half the size of the container surface)
  • Full wrap-around labelling (two ends of label overlap on container)
  • Neck labelling (label applied on the neck of the container)

For high speed packaging lines, a rotary self-adhesive labeller versus the inline labeller is most suited due to the speed of the production line. These labels are supplied on a roll that fits onto the labelling machine. Application of the label can be a simple one sided label on the container, or dual labels on either side of the container. It could also possibly be a label on the neck of the container or a tax stamp label on the lid of the container.

All of the above and combinations thereof can be achieved on our equipment. It some instances, a camera may be used for orientating the container in the machine in order to apply front and back labelling as an example.

Roll fed labelling machine

(See Machine in Action)

For our rollfed labeller range, we cater for application of the following types of labelling methods:

  • One sided labelling (label applied on one side of container only)
  • Front and back labelling (two labels applied 180˚ opposite one another on the same container)
  • Partial wrap-around labelling (covering more than half the size of the container surface)
  • Full wrap-around labelling (two ends of label overlap on container)
  • Neck labelling (label applied on the neck of the container)

Roll fed labellers are mostly used on medium to high speed packaging lines due to the output speed requirements. The machine design allows for much of the same features as for our rotary self-adhesive labellers, with the exception that we can accommodate either hot glue- or cold glue application to the label.

The machine design also allows for dual label rolls to be fitted to prevent downtime for changeovers, where the machine automatically selects the next roll when the first is depleted. Changeover times are relatively short between container sizes and a wide variety of container sizes and label formats can be accommodated on the same machine.

All of the above and combinations thereof can be achieved on our equipment. It some instances, a camera may be used for orientating the container in the machine in order to apply front and back labelling as an example.

Hot melt labelling machine

Below are some of the advantages for using a hot melt system

  • Clean. Contrary to the other processes with solvents, no dispersing agent is necessary for hot melt. It limits waste, emissions of volatile chemicals and makes it possible to save energy during the coating of the adhesive.
  • Rapid, precise, durable. Hot melt adhesives dry quickly and their strong adhesiveness allows for precise positioning of the label. The label will be durable and solid, whether it’s on glass, plastic or metal. Even on the most complex surfaces, the adhesive is rather strong so that the label remains in place. These adhesives are also resistant to heat, cold and water.
  • Invisible. “Hot melt” can be made to be transparent and therefore almost invisible on the product. Farewell to old glue that dulls the appearance of your packaging!
  • Approval. As these adhesives are not made from chemical solvents, they can be approved by the FDA, for example, and are safe when in contact with food.

Hot melt labelling refers to the glue application on the label. As such, the same functionality exists as for the standard rotary labellers. Hot melt labelling is also a more cost effective application due to the minimum amount glue required to apply the label and excess glue is recycled back to a holding tank for re-use.

Hot melt glue systems can bond a larger array of materials such as plastics, acrylics, and certain metals. They typically have a higher level of bonding strength.

The machine design also allows for dual label rolls to be fitted (in the event of rollfed), or multiple label magazines (in the event of precut labels) to prevent downtime for changeovers, where the machine automatically selects the next roll or magazine when the first is depleted. Changeover times are relatively short between container sizes and a wide variety of container sizes and label formats can be accommodated on the same machine.

Hotmelt systems can be used on rollfed labels (full wrap-around), but also on precut labels fitted in a label magazine inside the machine where the label is automatically picked, glued and placed on the bottle.

Cold glue labelling machine

Some advantages of cold glue labelling:

  • Direct label transfer eliminates glue pallets on many designs
  • Inline models provide lowest cost of ownership
  • Rotary models accommodate additional stations and combination labeling

Cold glue labelling refers to the glue application on the label. As such, the same functionality exists as for the standard rotary labellers. Cold glue labeling systems are ideal for heat sensitive materials and safer to use due to the reduced risk of burns. Cold glue systems can be incorporated on inline- or rotary labellers.

Various design options allow for single label, multi-label, and combination labeling overe the range of inline- and / or rotary equipment. The inline range of labellers is able to deliver the lowest cost of ownership for cylindrical containers at optimal small to medium output speeds. The rotary range can accommodate front, back, and neck requirements for a wide range of container shapes and sizes. Most applications use precut labels stacked in a removable magazine inside the machine.

The machine design also allows for multiple label magazines (in the event of precut labels) to prevent downtime for changeovers, where the machine automatically selects the next magazine when the first is depleted. Changeover times are relatively short between container sizes and a wide variety of container sizes and label formats can be accommodated on the same machine. On the rotary machines, the glue pattern can also be controlled as means of cost saving and all excess glue is collected and recycled in a holding tank.

Tamper proof  labelling machine

More companies are now focusing on Tamper Evident labels for their products. Product recalls are examples of the seriousness of product tampering. It has really become an issue where every industry is affected. Tamper evident packaging typically shows visible signs of meddling, such as a broken seal.

Normally a self-adhesive label, they cannot be removed in one piece and replaced or transferred to another product (typically a seal / label over the cap section of a container that is covering only a partial area of the cap or seal). Shrink Sleeves provide security with tamper-evident banding. (Full body sleeves, multi-pack bands, and neckbands.)

Destructible Film Labels break apart if removal is attempted.

It is possible to incorporate the tamper proof seal on the same labeller utilized for applying the normal body label to the container.

Seal (stamp) labelling machine

The stamp must be affixed in such manner that it will be broken when the bottle is opened, but so placed that a portion of the stamp will remain attached to the bottle when it is opened. Normally, no part of the stamp shall be concealed or obscured by any label or other covering, when there is a need to cover such stamps, the covering needs to be transparent in order for the information on the stamp to be visible.

It is possible to incorporate the stamp seal on the same labeller utilized for applying the normal body label to the container. This is normally on overhead applicator that will apply the seal inline.

Shrink sleeve labelling machine

(See Machine in Action)

Also known as shrink sleeve labels, shrink printed labels are one of the most popular types of printed labels on the market within the food and beverage industry as of date. The idea behind shrink labels are to “shrink” or mould the label to the products form, creating a durable and eye-catching 306 degree product label. This means that they do not use an adhesive to stick to the bottle but rather wrap themselves around the product when heat is applied.

Various machine models available allow us to cater for most size containers and can be supplied for entry level lines up to high output speed turnkey filling lines. Our model range also caters for applying a tamper evident shrink sleeve over the cap of the container utilizing the same machine that applies the body label.

A full body sleeve or partial body sleeve and variations in-between can be accommodated. Options for heat shrinking include an electrical- or steam heat tunnel. When a tamper sleeve over the cap only is required with other labelling applications, an inline unit can also be applied any existing packaging lines.

Filmatic Packaging Systems offers professional engineering services with regard to turnkey liquid packaging systems.
